A Friend in bonsai
John

Ron I think he was refering to this forum in general, not this thread.

I never had the chance to meet John but if he was anything like Ben then I do not think so. Not once did Ben rip on any of the trees put before him the day I spent with him. Even though many of the trees could have been ripped apart. Never did he say that the tree needed to go back into the ground for many years (though many should have). I never heard one negative comment from him. I think he understands that some have different goals in bonsai and does not want to turn people off no matter were they are in their own development. Ben is willing to do the best with what is put in front of him (and from what I have heard he learned that from John). Remember that bonsai can be enjoyed by both rich and poor, although the rich will have better material it does not mean their efforts are any better or worse than those less fortunate. It simply means that they can afford others art were others must learn to create whatever they can because they cannot afford to buy material that has many years of work into it. Both types are needed and essential for a balanced world.

With all due respect to all those more advanced than I am - Bull Feathers!

I do not, have not and never will have one shred of respect for anyone without enough knowledge, skill, or courage to call a piece of crap a piece of crap. Doing anything less is a waste of knowledge, time, and effort.

The person who is not told is being done a great injustice, one that will be corrected sooner or later and in my humble opinon, the sooner the better.

I can almost understand someone who is trying to make a living doing this. After all, why turn off the paying customers, better money in simply saying it's all good, than saying one is bad. I did say almost since this reeks of dishonesty to me.

You are right of course. I was just a bit confused by the comment.

Ben is a lot like John. I have a lot of respect for both of them.

"We all have the exact same goal....better bonsai."

Now that is bull-feathers (please note this is not an attack, simply a differing view point)

Not everyone has that goal (I do, but not everyone). Many people simply have the goal of keeping a bonsai alive. Others have the goal of learning patience (with their trees as well as others who may have differing opinions from their own). And others want to bring nature to their home and simply have a place/reason to relax in the backyard.

Bonsai means different things to different people. Thank god, otherwise this would be a very borring place.

No attack noted.
Just a side track of the subject at hand. We were talking about John Naka but it seems like someone wants to change the subject.
Yes I do think that all of us want to do the best bonsai that we can. That has been the topic of a lot of conversations on this forum. I have no problem with that. I don't think that it has to creep into every conversation though. But that is only my opinion.
FWIW Newt I do agree with your comments on bonsai.
