I have been away for a few months, and to discover this extremely sad news upon my return is a great shock, indeed. I always enjoyed heymikey's posts and will sorely miss them. My sincerest condolences to his friends and family.

John

I very sorry to hear that news. All I knew about him was that he was very enthusiastic about Bonsai and did some of the best virtual trees I have seen. Sad news.

You forget there's something higher than art-wisdom. Art at its greatest is nothing but the expression of wisdom. Wisdom comprehends everything: beauty, truth, good and enthusiasm. It teachs us to see something outside ourselves that is higher than what is within us and gradually come to resemble it.

I'm shocked to hear this! He seemed so young at heart and he was an outreagous artist.

Can you tell us a little more about Mike? Like what happened? Was this sudden or had he been ill for a while? What bonsai club did he belong to?
I only knew him from his IBC participation which was always friendly and very talented, especially in his ability to render virtual drafts of great bonsai. He seemed like someone I would enjoy knowing better.

He always felt like a close friend, although I've never met him. What a sad day!

I received an email yesterday with some sad news about heymikey (Mike Manos). Mike passed away on Saturday and will be missed by all whose lives he touched. He was an Oakland area resident and a friend to many online.
In addition to some beautiful virtuals heymikey shared dozens of amusing sketches and collages that reflected his own perspective on the world of bonsai.
I have set up a memorial at bonsaiTALK and we're taking a collection to benefit GSBF Collection North for a donation in his name. I'd be happy to send details to anyone interested in making a contribution.
You can reach me here

Attached below are just a couple of Mike's funny collages.
Regards,
Matt

Had he been ill? About how old was he, anyway? I didn't get the impression that he was particularly old. But some people are just perpetually young.
I always enjoyed reading his messages, but don't believe I ever had any back-and-forth with him.

I believe he was 62, and had been having trouble with his heart. He passed away during surgery, with his brother there, by his side. He was a great artist, and a kind man.

(Dear Admin - if this is of suitable interest please consider posting it to the Announcements area. I will put it here where it is definitely topical)
The first few of Mike Manos (HeyMikey's) trees have been posted on bonsaiAUCTIONS, with more to follow soon.
Proceeds from the auction will benefit GSBF Collection-North as a memorial to Mike a friend of bonsai who lived near the Northern Collection's home in Oakland, California.
Please drop by the auction and place a bid or consider a donation in Mike's name directly to GSBF-North:
"The Collection – North is a tax-deductible, charitable and educational organization. Your donations may be left at the collection or mailed to:
Golden State Bonsai Collection – North,
P. O. Box 16176,
Oakland, CA
94610-6176.

Bonsai, suiseki, and related materials are also accepted as tax-deductible donations."
Remember to mark your check Mike Manos/Heymikey Memorial Fund in the memo area.
Many thanks to cbobgo and Brent for caring for the trees and making this fund raiser possible
Thanks,
Matt
