Jim Moody - Jupiter, FL
I have just received the news that my good friend and mentor Jim Moody has died.
He died as he lived. Quietly and peacefully, surrounded by not only those that he loved but those that loved him the most. Not only has bonsai lost a beloved member of its society but I do think that the world has lost something most dear. A true southern gentleman has left us. All that knew him will know what I mean when I say he will be sorely missed. He was more than a good man. He was a caring man. Not something you will find everyday. I could go on about his accomplishments as one of the great bonsai artists but I do think most of you already know him for that. Not much sense repeating what you already know. I'll just say Jim always did the best he could, made no excuses and left no apologies due. I owe him a lot and will miss him dearly. God bless him. |

Ron,
I have not had the opportunity to have met him, but what I have read, and how his friends and people who have come to know him, they all have made him to be a person for which I would liked to have met. I am sorry for your loss of a friend, and to his family, a heartfealt prayer will be said. Paul

Ron:
I am very grateful for your "introduction" to Jim (I think he would have seen me anyway.) I will always remember that he gave me the last fruit of the season off his jaboticaba to taste. I am sorry I never got deeper into bonsai with him, except to buy a few trees. As you say, he was a real gentlemen in the finest southern tradition. I am grateful that his daughter Carolyn and grandson, Allan are there to continue his wonderful establishment, but we will miss him greatly. I had hoped to visit him again this spring, while my wife was shopping in Palm Beach. |

Ron,
Sorry to hear this news. It is sad to hear of the loss of part of America's bonsai foundations. From what I understand, Jim touched a great many people's lives and his legacy is perpetuated even today by those who knew and learned from him. I've heard and read nothing but positive things about him and his work; surely a wonderful guy. My condolences to his friends and family. In Sympathy, Andy Rutledge |

I found this interview with Jim Moody in the excellent Florida Bonsai Societies' newsletter (PDF Format). Jim's interview begins on page 6.
Regards, Matt

Matt: You left out the URL! The newsletter (Feb) can be reached through: http://www.bonsai-bsf.com/color_cy.htm The november newsletter is also there. Both are Great reading. To me, Jim represented all of the best of the wonderful folks who I have met since getting involved with bonsai. Generous with his time, infinitely patient, and delighting in the inquisitiveness of relative novices. I'm sorry I didn't know him better! |
