As long as there is new material in the article, or an expansion of an idea, that is perfectly fine. The source material shouldn't matter.... as long as the article presents the information in a new way and with new/expanded information.

Whatever works for you, just let me know what you would like to do. The article needs to actually appear on the forum for voting, however, we won't be sending people to an offsite link if that is what you mean. You can compose your article in Word or something like that, and then email it through the email address given in the contest rules... that is one option. Pm me privately if you need more information!

In order to be considered for publication in the magazine, authors must be willing to submit to Stone Lantern high resolution, high quality photos if the article requires photos. (Illustrations are acceptable as well). For magazine purposes, the photos should be 300 dpi; clear, well lighted; preferable neutral or uncluttered background, JPGs or TIFs. A minimum of 2 million pixels would be reasonable. You may wish to consider retaining the raw photos in case your article is chosen. If you have any questions, please ask me. Consideration of articles is solely at the discretion of Bonsai Today magazine.
Do drawings made with "Paint" have to be 2 million pixels too?

  • B. SUBMISSIONS & DEADLINE:
  • Articles should be submitted here as a new thread posted to the Articles Contest Forum or emailed to articlesATbonsaitalk.com. You can submit them in WORD or text format with photo attachments if you choose to use email.
Is it maybe wise, to make the article in "frontpage" in html format?
or to send it as a pdf file (Adobe Acrobat)?

how can I upload my article?

Hope you can answer these questions, thanks

I'll find that out for you, Wessel! Drawings shouldn't have to be as big as pictures, but let's make sure.

I think that html is going to be the choice. Then it can be posted to the forum as usual.

What can you write about?

Just as bonsai has many components and there are multiple avenues to explore, your choices of subjects for articles is also very wide. Anything to do with bonsai.... from how-to's; to interviewing artists, growers, nursery operators, potters, woodworkers, club organizers, people who specialize in accent plants, suiseki, hon non bo, saikei, etc; to historical articles on aspects of bonsai like historical collecting, species domestication, the changes in bonsai design and thought, cultural influences; propagation such as cuttings, air layers, seeds, specific species propagation, the role of sports in developing new cultivars; bonsai fiction or book reviews; humorous essays; the role of sketching or photoshopping in visualizing bonsai futures; how to sketch, how to photoshop, how to visualize; aspects either specific or general about display, accent plants, scrolls, mudmen, choosing a table, showing the tree or display to its best advantage; collecting pins; the role of clubs in bonsai education, good projects for clubs, how to set up raffles, how to raise money for your club, how to bring good presenters and give them the advantage in what they bring to the club, setting up a club newsletter, setting up a club website; how to sew happi coats; judging bonsai, setting up a show, publicizing a show, displays for a show; species outlines; diseases, pests, fertilizers, (dare I say it?) soil, pot care, tool care.....

Those are just a few ideas for subjects, the range is wide and varied.

Good luck, and start thinking!
