2006 Articles Contest Submission Instructions
This post describes how to submit your articles for the 2006 Articles Contest.
a) The articles for the 2006 Articles Contest need to be actually submitted to us - you can't link because we need a SUBMISSION that can be logged and your link might wind up unintentionally "published" if a search engine spider gets hold of it b) Entrants should include the following statement in their submission "The attached article is an original work by its authors (List names of all author(s).) This work has not been published in any form prior to entry in the bonsaiTALK Articles Contest. We, the authors, have read and understand the contest rules, and permit bonsaiTALK, or its designees, to edit and to publish this article in any form for any purpose." SUBMITTING ARTICLES - 2 Options A) The best alternative is to edit your article in your favorite word processing program / editor and email them to articles2006@bonsaiTALK.com You can use Word, or another application that can produce a text, Word, or HTML file. (Acrobat & Pagemaker stuff isn't ideal unless you can publish to HTML otherwise it will become a bit of a headache.) You should get an acknowledgement of your submission within 48 hours. If you don't, then PM Joanie. B) Alternatively and I really don't recommend this - You can post short articles by starting a new thread here in the 2006 Articles Contest forum. They should go to moderation and won't appear immediately. Consequently you would not be able to edit them after entering them, so submissions by email are strongly recommended. If you were to post in the wrong forum, or start a new post instead of a new thread your entry would be visible to everyone, you'd be published, you'd have broken the rules, and you'd lose. So why chance it just email the article! Thanks for your patience in getting this set up. Regards, Matt ------------------------REMINDER ADDITION----------------------- Here's a reminder when you mail your articles, please include 1. the release statement from step b) above with your 'real' name. 2. your forum user name 3. if you're in the running for a prize, include your mailing address. This step is optional, but it sure speeds things up having everything in one place. --------------------------------------------------------------------------

That is a pretty all inclusive statement. Not sure if I go along with the last sentence. Especially that "any purpose" part. But then rules is rules and one must abide to enter the contest. |

Anyone who disagrees with any of the rules definitely should not enter. As it happens this particular rule is neither new nor unusual: It was included in both the 2005 Styling contest and the 2005 Articles Contest. (You can find the past contests here ) Also, I am sure you would find a similar wording in most any contest, e.g. World Bonsai Contest Quote:

Don't get me wrong Matt I agree. It is a Bonsaitalk contest and should be run by Bonsaitalk rules. I have no argument with that. |

I'm glad. I thought you were suggesting the submission guidelines were different than before, or somehow unusual or unreasonable.

Here are just a couple of ideas that come to mind, although considering that the last ones weren't used for anything.... maybe the "home page" of bonsaitalk.com, or a newsletter type of email from bonsaitalk.... that would be two options that Matt might want to keep open.
Remember, the author can still publish elsewhere, after the contest. You aren't giving up your rights, only allowing bonsaiTALK to also use the material if desired. Joanie

No, I can't imagine every eventuality. But here are some past examples that we have had in terms of usage of materials from bonsaiTALK.
Again, this is not a new requirement, nor is it an unusual requirement. Suiseki Contest Quote:

BTW, unlike the two examples above, bonsaiTALK is not in any way claiming exclusive rights. Regards, Matt

html submissions ???
For an article submitted in html format I assume:
Or is it OK to supply a custom-formatted article, complete with specific fonts, colours, backgrounds etc? Regards, Chris.

Hi Chris,
You can format it any way you like, including fonts and colors. We can't guarantee the formatting will be kept 100% intact but it will certainly be a help having the initial layout. Sometimes for page layout things need to change (like column count, thumbnail size, for example) If you're using html then having everything referencing a single folder would be helpful. Regards, Matt
