GSBF: Show Sensation
I met the most wonderful artist at the convention. A very talented bonsai master who can create magic on paper as well as with trees. His name is Uyen Truong. He graciously allowed me to watch him sketch his own tree, which was diplayed in the gallery. (see photo) It is a collected specimen that he has styled over time (a California Juniper). Although I was overwhelmed by the beauty of this tree, Uyen still feels there is much more work to be done. The drawing that he made shows future subtle changes to the shape of the canopy and turns the whole tree about 20 degrees to the left for a new front, to better display the deadwood he finds most appealing. His initial drawing was done in ink (no pencil guidelines). He then added the dimension with a wash pen over the areas that required shadow. He slowly built the layers of detail with varying tones of the wash. Although we had just met, he spent quite a lot of time explaining the technique to me and showing me his tools.
While at the convention, Mr. Truong made frame-ready pen and ink drawings of all the trees created during the event that were either in the auction or the raffle. He did this as a gift for the creator of the tree to remember it by after it was claimed by the winner. Many of the creators chose to allow the wonderful works of art to be a part of the auction. So many people were impressed that he received many inquiries as to where they could purchase his work. One man asked if a portrait could be made of one of his favorite trees. Jade, Uyen's beautiful wife, attended the show on Saturday and was such a pleasure to meet. I am always amazed at the generosity and kindness of bonsai artists and was so honored to meet this inimitable expert. Michelle

Yeah that guy has some talent. Nice to talk with also. I was intrigued by his brush pens. He just draws effortlessly.
