GSBF Report #7, Circle of Sensei Awards

During the GSBF convention dinners we watched Award ceremonies. One of the most touching was the Circle of Sensei Awards. They were started in 2001 by GSBF to honor those who have taught others. (For newbies, the word "Sensei" means teacher in its simplified connotation, but no doubt has nuances that I am not aware of) Here is a link to the previous awards, although 2004 is missing.

This year we were proud to honor Shig Miya and Richard Ota. Both of the men are long time bonsai artists, and have spent many years teaching. Their contributions to bonsai are the culmination of lifetimes devoted to the art.

They received a lovely medal on a red white and blue ribbon which they wore proudly the rest of the convention.

These two men are an inspiration.

I asked Joe James (the President of GSBF) if the men knew that they would be receiving the awards, and he said the recipients had agreed beforehand to accept the awards. That way they were prepared and there was no awkwardness.

It would be wonderful if anyone who has learned under one of these men, or knows them personally, would post in this thread. I will also try to find the information for the 2004 awards.
