One day at a time...
|
Bear with me.
I guess there's a learning curve to posting. I can't seem to keep up with where everything is supposed to go. I'll catch on any minute.
Michelle P.S. Sorry to be a newbie, first time participating. So far I've just been a sideline observer of bonsaiTalk, enjoying everyone elses information and commentary. Thanks for being patient.

Last minute details...
Michelle here, signing in for duty. (I think I've got the hang of it now.) What could be better than leaving the husbands (we love you guys a bunch, and yes, we know, we owe you big time for this one) to look after the house, the kids, the pets, and the details while we skip off to Anaheim for 5 days and 4 nights. Cindy's trees and rocks (lots of rocks) and pots and moss and soil for her workshop are taking first priority. Luggage is also an issue with three women. I must pose the question: How many pairs of shoes does one really need for 5 days? I may need to leave the shoes so we have room for the computer. I can't wait to see all the vendors and sit in to watch the masters at work. Hopefully we'll get some photos of the grapes brought back from the dig. Cindy's workshop will be a highlight, of course, ...Gotta finish packin'. Anaheim GSBF Convention or BUST! See you there. |

I was up to finish packing at 4:30 am, hurt my back last week and the pinched nerve is really ouchie. No matter, I'd crawl over broken glass to get to this convention!
Michelle, how many shoes?? One pair. One good pair of Birkies and you could walk across the earth. Well, at least until it rains. But Anaheim isn't likely to get rain this week, weather is forecast to be fair and cool. Camera, extra batteries, tea (five varieties, because you just never know), etc.... all packed. Hubby and kids looking forward to a week of pizza, staying up late, Mommy not kicking them off the computer, and eating the rest of the Halloween candy. The dogs look pretty mournful, though. ("If she leaves, who is going to feed us??") You can see it in their eyes. Dogs live in the moment, you can't tell them to look at a calendar. Going back to packing now. Pictures to follow when Cindy and Michelle arrive! Joanie

Don't forget to take a permanent marker with you to get those bonsai aprons signed by the masters!

Oh what a GREAT idea!
Throwing in a handful of them now! Thanks Matt! I think we get tool rolls instead of aprons, but a signed tool roll will be very cool. 'Lyn Stevenson was saying that conventions used to do hapi coats for participants but when they got too expensive it was switched to aprons, that's too bad because hapi coats would be a lot of fun. She says she has a whole closet full of them. Any other tips for the newbies?? Joanie Joanie

Sharpies...I never would have thought of that. Great idea, thanks Matt.
Last, last minute...Watering the trees, filling husband in on watering schedule, must not fret about trees, trees can live without me for 5 days. They really are leafy pets, aren't they? Michelle

Although I have attended conventions I haven't participated in the workshops except once as an assistant for John Thompson a few years ago.
I did see that most of the workshop participants had a hand cart of some type to transport the larger trees and their tools & supplies. They were running all over with them in the elevators and corridors. It's probably something you can borrow if you have the need, but they are kind of ubiquitous at those conventions. There's a pretty fair amount of pin swapping that goes on at these things, so it's an opportunity to take a dozen of your club's pins and come back with some unique ones. There are some serious collectors out there. Joanie if you see anything that looks interesting (colorful + inexpensive) for the auctions, maybe we could get some of those going. I really thing the auction site would lend itself to pin trading, and there's a category all set up for it. They're small, light and mail inexpensively and safely. Joanie, I'll stake you $50 for the pin project if you have the interest to jump start this with the purchase of some interesting collectible pins. Many thanks, Matt

No problem, Matt! Is there a catagory that is particularly one to look for or stay away from? Are pins from past conventions acceptable, or are they only sought after by people who attended them? Are pins from artists more interesting than pins from conventions?
Hand cart...good idea!! Got one around here somewhere (digging in closet) yep that's a help. Waiting for the gals to arrive now, ready to go! Joanie

There are pins for everything. Clubs, conventions and individuals. The most sought after ones Limited edition Japanese pins from the likes of Taikan-ten, and Japanese Masters.(=expensive) are probably not the ones we want for the purpose of the auction.
Some people make their own pins pretty much as an incentive for trading. I think we want those colorful, interesting, inexpensive ones. But if you're a real horsetrader, (!) you can probably parley one great pin into a handful of good ones. Stay away with those guys with the velvet pin folios. They'll take your eyeteeth! Regards, Matt
