Upstate (SC) Bonsai Study Group

Having sought others in my area for a few years interested in bonsai, I've finally located enough people interested in forming a club. Any ideas/tips on promoting for new members is always welcome.

We're ironing out the details, but anyone in the Upstate area of South Carolina, interested in bonsai should check out http://upstatebonsai.com . Theres a section detailing whats going on in the organization of this group, as well as a place to leave your information if you're interested in learning more about it.

And of course, a link back to bonsaitalk is already in place!

Looks like a good start. The BCI site has some relevant info.

The first meeting was January 27, 2006. We ended up discussing each other's trees for a little while, then repotted a nice shimpaku and eventually a monster trident. The first went into a proper bonsai pot, the second into a more appropriate nursery container.

While the trident was being repotted I wired my JBP. I answered a lot of questions, and apparently since I was showing people the proper way to wire I ended up doing a good job of it. I guess I need the accountability. It was just one branch though. I'll see how it looks overall when I'm done.

Anyone in the upstate of SC is welcome to attend/help/participate. We'd love to have you.

What caught me was a small article in a local reminder type news paper, that is usually on the free racks. The ads are sometimes free, or at least not too expensive.

Gotta get the word out, one other way is to do a show, hopefully somewhere with a lot of traffic so you can attract attention.

Another is see if anyone in your group has a contact or is willing to "harass" your local media ( print and tv) to try and get a story, or quick local interest story in the news, Sunday papers here usually have a gardening section, try that guy first.
Also look for local gardening clubs, might snag a few from there.

Good Luck! Sometimes clubs struggle along, other times they boom, both can be good, depending on what your members make of it.

Expect good things...

I was fortunate enough to attend the May gathering of the Upstate SC Bonsai Study Group. A good time was had by all, and the turnout was pretty good for a fledgling group. Hats off to Wayne (bwaynef) for heading up this venture, and staying with it to ensure its success. A thank you also the proprietor of the facility at which we met, we appreciate your hospitality. I expect to see and hear good things about this group, and hope to be able to attend again in the future.
Regards,
Rusty Harris
