San Diego Bonsai Club Show

Tomorrow and Sunday, Sept. 24th and 25th, is the annual fall show for the San Diego Bonsai Club. In the Prado, at the beautiful Balboa Park, the show is always a delight.

I will be working as security, and also bringing food for the volunteers. I'll be there both days for the entire show. If anyone from bonsaiTALK wants to stop by and see the show, please come and say hi to me too. (Security is sometimes lonely, sitting in a chair, scanning the mame table) I'll be wearing a name badge.

Hope to see some friends!!

Pity I can't be there

I've found that working security is a great way to participate in educating the public about bonsai.

Perhaps the visitors to shows in Cali have a little more background, but in Ohio I've spent much of my security time chatting with visitors about bonsai and answering basic Q's. Very fun!

EDIT: wow, this is my 1,501st post here on BT

Well, you're right, it is fun to answer their questions, but there is usually a "more mature" bonsai artist hovering around to do that. They still eye me with suspicion, being a newbie and all. So except for very pressing moments, I am generally keeping an eye on the suiseki and mames. And telling the kids to keep their hands off said items. And running errands, and stirring the crock pot full of Mystery Weiners in preparation for lunch.

Nice suit, Pootsie! (grin) Bet it keeps the kids on their best behaviour!

Where were you Didya come? Did you buy something??

Our sale was great (still good trees left if anyone is coming tomorrow.... but the best are gone) Some really nice olives, pomegranates, etc. Bigger stock. A lovely grape vine. I bought a brazilian rain tree, a super deal! And quite a few charming chrysanthemums done as root over rock, for as low as $15.00, ready to bloom in a month. A lovely "tree" to display in the fall, and very traditional in Japan.

We had two demos today, one for beginners, and one was by an incredible Vietnamese bonsai and hon non bo artist who is a member of the club. He demonstrated thread grafting, approach grafting, and other techniques on ficus, particularly to promote aerial rooting. His insights and his experience with ficus kept the audience attention very focused.

Tomorrow, hopefully, I will have a fuller report with photos.

I did go, but didn't buy anything. As you said, the good ones are gone.

I meant many people: - Cindy, Mr. Ko and saw many nice bonsai. I even joined the club. Will be attending some classes in Jan. as well.

Our show is over once again, and a wonderful time was had by all. Today we had two demos but I didn't write down the demonstrators names, so cannot report except to say that the audience particularly enjoyed them. The first demo was by a club member, and he made a fantastic juniper bonsai from stock he had grown in his yard. The sound of tearing, ripping juniper limbs and bark (to create the jinned apex) caught and held everyone's attention. Unfortunately, the room became crowded and I could only concentrate on guarding the trees and answering questions.

One of our founding members turned 90 this month, and we celebrated his birthday. His name is Ko, and he is still very involved with bonsai and with the club. Ko is the sweetest man... and his trees are wonderful! It is an honor to have him, and Mas, and others who were here from the beginning and remain treasures to us.

Peter, it was wonderful to see you! Perhaps we will go collecting with Harry one day... that would be so fun!

An article is in the works for the forum, but my heart is full tonight from such a wonderful and inspiring show.
