I love my Bonsai Club - now with photos...
Just got back from an excellent evening at my local Bonsai club:
- We had a two hour talk and demo about Shohin presentation by Ab Demmendal. Use of stands, tables etc about how the shows are judged, the correct choice and positioning of the trees and accents/rocks/scrolls. He had brought along a fantastic selection of his own shohin and we were encouraged to "have a go" and formulate a display from the trees. Al would have loved it. He critiqued our own trees and commented on future styling. Below are photos of the trees... - I bought two large shallow trays each > 50cm (18") for EUR50 ($65) for the pair - one with, one without holes. Great value. Big sack of akadama EUR16 ($20), some wire, screening mesh etc - There was beer - hey this is Holland. And then finally there was a raffle - where I won a Shohin Trident maple AND a Tidy Tray: http://www.home-garden-supply-catal.../Tidy_Tray.html Fantastic! Beginners - find a club and join. Here are the photos I took...
Photo 1 : Ab Photo 2 : Ab different angle Photo 3 : A possible arrangement. Conifer MUST be above the rest if present. The trees on the extreme right and left of the photo are not in the arrnagement. Note that the flat right tray is intentionally closer to the viewer. Visual triangles with the foliage of trees leading from one to the next. Photo 4 : Elms from another member. Photo 5 : Side view. Flowering Crab Apple. Photo 6 : Another side view.

Photo 1 : Closer shot of trees. Photo 2 : That Larch is less than 9cm (3") tall. Photo 3 : Close up of larch - I'm holding it. Note that the moss would be trimmed before going into exhibition. Jerry

Lovely pictures - good resolution too, which is mostly not the case at forums.

I couldn't agree more. Next to taking lessons from a master, joining a club is about the best thing you can do to advance yourself in bonsai. I lhad a great time at my club in Chicago, and my new club out here in CA is a good one too. Everyone should look into joining, and being active in their local club.

THIS is one of the best Clubs I know.
You can join in at any time. (24/7) See far more trees. Chop off branches and alter styles, all without major damage to the actual tree ! Talk and Debate various issues. Learn a great deal. Be told a lot of nonsence (just like any other club!) and best of all - NEVER divulge your real address to any new member who may want to help him or herself to that Wonderful tree you have By all means try the practical aspect of a local club, and having regular "Masters" along to help style is great - but for that everyday BONSAI FIX - BonsaiTalk just suits me fine. All the best, Ian. (Matt - All Rep Points greatly appreciated ) ![]() |
