*title-edit* Grass-roots effort to start a club -- HOWTO

I'm really interested in how this goes. Not 'cause I'm particularly interested in doing it myself, but it wil be neat to see the interest one person could generate in a community.

I think I'd add a phone number, and if you could make it have those little tear-off tabs at the bottom, maybe they won't steal your flyer.

Regards,

Matt

Sad, but true. I wonder if they just toss the pots? They are of a low quality,
but they could be put to some use. Hmmmmmm.....

funny, i once told them i'd give them $20 for one of those "lava rock look alike fountain things" that had two dead junipers in it. the woman said to me, "that's a $99 item", to which i replied, "most of the item is dead, i just want the rest, you guys will just end up throwing it out right." she checked with the dept head and i was again told that this item cost $99 and that was it. i don't know if it is store policy or not when it comes to pots, but i do know that right around thanksgiving you see several plants in the outdoor area and that weekend, (dumpster ) they mysteriously disappear (dumpster ) and i used to work there, i know they do throw a few things away. in fact, they wouldn't even let me take home the throw aways when i was employed there.

I tried buying a recently vacated bonsai pot from BigBox® and they told me I'd get 10% off since the tree was dead.

Which left a $5 pot for about $19. I passed it up, but wonder why they wouldn't take $5 for something which, to them, had become garbage.

Time to go Dumpster Diving. Most stores have a company policy against employees taking what is to be thrown away.

So check out the dumpster after hours.

It's a matter of principle. If the store managers let you negotiate with them for prices they think that maybe others will start to do it too. Like if you found out you could buy pots with dead trees in them for like $5, what's to stop you from killing all the trees to buy the pots for cheap. Also, you can't go to a store and tell them, "there's a spot on this apple, I want 50% off," they'd tell you to go back to produce select a good one and pay full price.

I think dumpster diving is illegal, petty theft if I recall. So, facetiously or not, it might land you in jail with the drunkies one night

I think most of that Home Depot stock is owned by the nursery - so there are limits on how deeply they can discount it. If it dies or close to it, and they throw it away, they've established that it's a loss. Sometimes they aren't even responsible for watering it if it's contracted out to some other firm.

Regards,

Matt
