Bonsai Club Auction Of Goods

Hi all
I was wondering if any of you who belong to bonsai clubs ever tried a bonsai auction on one of your meeting nights.

At Bonsai Northwest we had a lot of fun on Monday night with this method and a lot of new people got there hands on some cheap and good trees, books, pots, tools etc.

Here is a link to our website. I organised most of the night. It was quite exhausted with 85 pieces of bonsai related material for sale all needing to be recorded and so on.

Hi David

Yes, in fact the Minnesota Bonsai Society (i am not a member but go to the auctions) just had their Fall auction in early October. They also have a spring auction. I find this to be exciting. The MBS auctions are both silent and live. Also a few vendors come as well. I think they are a splendid Idea.

Our auction is not silent and people call out their bids. It is a great chance for experienced members to get rid of some of their things to mainly inexperienced members.

I love them too. It was a mad house beforehand though and I was dripping with sweat trying to organise all the items.

Wow. There were some beautiful trees up for auction. I loved the silver birch and the cascade juniper. It's almost enough to get me to join a local club. May I ask how much some of those trees went for?

The cascading juniper wasn't for sale unfortunately. That was on our member tree display. The birch had a fantastic nebari and I believe it sold for about AUS$65 or about US$35. Pretty cheap.

The prices were quite cheap across the board. I believe one of the best auction items was a triple trunk Swamp Cypress which is pictured. That went for AUS$70. So another US$35.

As you can imagine it was a lot of fun. Also another great reason to belong to a club. Cheap STUFF ....

Man, I can't believe that cypress went for so cheap. I saw the pictures of it. Someone must have been feeling generous...

The grower of both the birch and the swamp cypress grew eveything himself. I guess it is the beauty of belonging to a club where everyone looks after one another. Not like some retailers who put huge prices on rubbish stock and make bonsai a very expensive hobby for some.

Hi again...

The silent auction I mention goes on during the live bidding.....the items are on tables and people wandering around can write down bids, the closing is during half time thru the live auction.
Silent auctions hold nursery stock, pots, small trees and etc. Our live auction gets to the bigger stuff, nice trees and such.

David, what kind of dog is that in your Avatar? Looks like a Great Pyrenees pup I have without the badger markings...or a spitz. Cute little thing tho
