Thank you guys so much for your help! I still might try and get a website/forum if it got to where nothing was organized with the chat, but after hearing your comments, IMing or chatting would be the best idea.

*goes to find California people*

Jennifer, what part of California are you in? What city are you close to? I'd give my left...nuthin to see here....to live in California, there are too many clubs of all shapes and sizes to choose from.

Do you want the best instruction you can find? I have an idea.
Do you want cookies and coffee? Other ideas.
Do you want to show trees, and see great trees developed and shown? You couldn't possibly be in a better place for that.

Ok, wait a sec. Are you telling me that I SHOULD start the club, and it'll just take alot of work? Or are you saying just to JOIN a club I'm confuzzled.

Thanks all for your great ideas.

bonsaikc, I live in Los Angeles. I would LOVE to find a club that serves cookies and coffee, and perhaps has some shows and demonstrations.

HOWEVER, I AM planning on moving to (hopefully) Michigan after I get married, but by the time we've gotten married and everything, and now with this whole situation with my mom and all, I don't know how quick I'll be able to move. Do you think it would be worth joining a club even if I'm only going to be a Cali girl for a few more months?

That's why I wanted to start an online club. Because with my fiance's job, I have a feeling we'll have to move around alot, (he's moved over 4 times) and an online club I would be able to stay with no matter where I am, and I wouldn't have to join a new club each time we move. It's like the whole "new kid in school" concept.

Jennifyr - Sorry I thought at first you meant creating a regular club, but Yes I meant join a club, even if it's for 3-4 months, there are clubs in Mi., and taking some Cal. info with you won't hurt. You will probably make aquaintances that can at least e-travel with you, as far as an online club - this one is one of the most active online clubs for bonsai, although most don't call BT a club, thats how I often describe it .

We won't hold it against you if you join a club with a room, just keep coming here to share.

Club digs in the Cal. spring are THE most productive.

Ok, thanks. I'm still thinking about starting that online club, because I feel like this isn't really a club-club if you know what I mean, and I've been in clubs before, just not bonsai ones, and there's really a good feeling throughout a club that is irreplaceable unless you are actually part of a true club.

I think I'll start by trying to find a Cali club and then trying to find a Michigan club, so I can try both. I might start the online club as well as a normal club though. There's just something about it that "pops" to me.

Jennifer,
A hands on club with good people who have some expertise will beat online, book, telephone, video chat, etc. by a million times. Here's why. Try as we will, describing how something is done, or demonstrating from a distance will never give you as much information as seeing it done in person, and having some help doing it yourself. By engaging more senses, your mind integrates it more fully.

You may not realize this, but working with a knowledgeable person on your own tree teaches you things subconsciously as well as consciously. Touching, hearing, and seeing what is going on, and even the smell of your tree or its soil will give you information that you will learn to process and will make you a much better bonsai artist. I hesitate to suggest you taste your tree or its soil. But I will say that the more of your senses you engage, the better.

In fact, I would say that learning about bonsai on the internet is to really working with bonsai as cybersex is to a fulfilling love partnership. They are only technically in the same genre.

What part of Michigan are you moving to?
There are several clubs here, The Four Seasons Bonsai Club meets in Troy and Thye Ann Arbor Bonsai Society meets in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan Arboretum.

There are also clubs located in central and west Michigan.

Way up there where the snow is ten feet deep in February and doesn't melt until after Memorial Day. So if you are into winter sports you'll be in heaven.

The growing season is about two days long (it seems that way).
But there some great wineries and lots of cherries.

Good luck and welcome to Michigan.
