the All-American Shohin Society !
At the World Bonsai Convention in Washington, the All American Shohin Society was officially introduced! We had our first official board meeting with election of officers, etc. The All American Shohin Society was founded to educate about and promote the art of shohin bonsai. We are very excited about this national (and also international) Society.
-MORE- Many of those on the board are not interested in the 'same old' organizational models - we are about promoting the love of shohin bonsai! We will be working with other shohin bonsai organizations nationally and internationally - we already have Japanese and European board members as well as regional members in the Americas (Walter Pall and Yoshihiro Nakamizu attended the meeting in Washington). Since we are just beginning, there is still much to be done. However, we are beginning to get things rolling. Memberships are available (see below) and in September we are having 4 workshops with shohin bonsai master Tomohiro Masumi of Japan. This will be in Wilmington DE on Sept 15 and 16. Next May we will be hosting Morten Albrek of Shohin-Bonsai Europe; and, in 2007, will be the inaugural All-American Shohin Society Symposium. I would like to extend an invitation to Bonsai Talk shohin bonsai lovers to join and support this new endeavor. A website is being developed as well as a quarterly newsletter (please be patient). If you have an interest in joining, I can email you a membership form and info on the September workshops (as soon as I can get them in .pdf format). Of course, if you are interested in getting more involved than just membership - contact us! Thanks, John Romano (I posted this in the general forum but if you feel it should go somewhere else, Matt, please transfer it). |

Thanks John for the great news.
I think that shohin bonsai can represent the cutting edge in new developments and discoveries regarding the art of bonsai. The reason might be that as the tree becomes smaller, the challenges grow exponentially and there is less and less room for error. Also, the techniques applied have to be perfectly executed with the diminishing size: one mistake can be glaringly obvious on a tiny tree and ruins the whole effect, while with large trees one has a little more leeway in this regard. So, contrary to what many believe, there is much more to shohin than its size. It's a very specialized universe within the larger universe of bonsai. Regards, Attila |

G'day John,
Wonderful shohin, rather nice pics, pity the names of the individual trees was overlooked, ....do you intend to let he group know when the book becomes available and where one can get it, like for those of us over here in Europe and other parts of the world outside of the US? Nigel

Hi Nigel,
Thanks for your kind words. The trees are (from top, going clockwise): Shimpaku juniper (also enlarged), Yamadori shohin American Larch, Korean Boxwood, Crabapple (bottom left) and Oriental Bittersweet. I did not mention a book of any kind - maybe you are referring to the newsletter? When the website is up (that is not my area of expertise - someone else is doing that), I will give out that info. I have copied the flyers in .pdf format and will send them on to those who have responded. They seem to take up a lot of space so may take a bit to download. Be patient. If you prefer, I can mail out copies to you (if you do not have a high speed line). thanks, John Romano Last edited by bunjingi : 3-Jun-2005 at 12:01 PM. |

John,
I'm sure there are others besides me that visit this forum that would like to consider joining this group. Is there any way to post the application form so that we don't have to bother you further?
