Walter Pall at Shanti Bithi Nursery

I am in no way associated with this nursery, I am on their mailing list and received this notification in the mail today. I will be away that weekend, otherwise I would be there in a flash, so I am passing this along.

Florida?

That's simple: speak to your club and they can contact me and then we'll see.

Ha! I don't see much enthusiasm in that comment Walter.

I too am in Florida and would love to have you at an event. I think a person of your caliber would be better to have at a future State Convention for the entire weekend. A good demo or workshop with some local material, something that would challenge your abilities. I have a feeling that our "tropical outlook" may not suit your fancy though. Or does it?

In the central part of the state, in Ocala National Forest we have a plant culture not found anywhere else. It's called the Florida Scrub. Some of the diverse plants are the sand pine (Pinus clausa) and the scrub oak (Quercus inopina). Here is a link (from Floridata.com, thanks Jack) to the native plants only found in the scrub. Many have potential to make great bonsai.

I will lobby our local representative to the State organization and see how we could begin the request process as to future guest artists at State Conventions. I would even offer to provide select collected native material dug from property I own that borders the forest. It would be an honor to have you work on some "non tropical" Florida natives as I feel they would work with your styling talents.

We'll see.

Graydon,

I have toured Florida and I have no problem at all with tropical trees. I have a lot of exposure to them over my travels.
Quite a lot of folks, especially in Florida believe in tropical trees looking good when shaped like standard bonsai. A standard bonsai is the one you know from the textbook, a northern ideal pine tree.
I absolutely do not believe that this is the case. I teach tropical trees looking like tropical trees and not like a caricature of a bonsai.

It is a general misunderstanding to think that a bonsai teacher wold not know about a species that does not grow where he lives. I have done indigenous trees in Australia. I have worked on trees in South Africa.
