Ted Matson Workshop

The Fresno Bonsai Society had a workshop today with Ted Matson. Ted is well known in bonsai circles conducting workshops and doing demos nation wide. I brought my small shohin blackpine today. Shohin is one of Teds passions and he loves working on improving good stock.

Ted Matson going over improvements on a California Juniper.

Ray Thieme really threw Ted for a loop with this tree. Ted had no expierance with Razzleberry. This is a huge vine that had grown in someones yard for many years. The branches on this bush a pretty small, no larger than a pencil. The tree does bud very easily and the branches can be totally removed each year. The trunk is a full 7" in diameter here.

On the above photo, you can see the stub of a large branch that had been removed in years past. It was decided that this had to be reduced. Ray brought a new toy to play with. The arbor tech chews away wood like a termite.

Steve DaSilva working on a collected juniper. The trunk had a very sharp return bend on it that made this tree interesting.

Roz Tampone with a corkbark Elm. This tree needs some taper. The trunk is quite large, but is fat till the last couple of inches. Ted says that on his next trip, they might take a chainsaw to the trunk. They will induce a shari, on one side to make the tree seem as to have been a in a storm or smashed by a boulder or something. When the material has reached this stage, very large and not easy to deal with, they call for drastic measures to make the tree asthetically pleasing.

I took a small black pine for Ted to give suggestions on. I felt that the jin was too tall and looked to contrived. This is the way the tree looked before.

Teds suggestion included to remove two branches from the tree. Most of the tree is built from a branch cluster on the right side of the trunk. The first branch on the right, the largest, is the only branch that is seperate from the cluster. It was his idea and mine that over the years this would become a large swellage that would ultimately have to be reduced. If we take a couple of branches now and one more maybe next year, Ted feels that the area will heve been reduced enough to not swell. Ted also explained the importance of removing the two year old needles. He also had me remove all the needle packets that live in the small fork of the branches. This is where black pines just love to shoot buds from. These areas get so dense that light will not penetrate and this will cause the slowdown of new bud formation. Ted also liked the taller jin. He also agreed it looked to contrivedm and needed more texture. I did some dremmel work, and will do more this week. I needed a smaller cutting bit then I had with me. He wants to add some "dimpling". This is where a person uses a very small ball cutter and plunges holes very close together. When doing this some of the walls will break away and form irregular areas that look quite natural. As time goes by these wear down to a very natural looking rough looking texturized area. This is the tree thinned and pruned.

Ted talking about his love of shohin. Ted belongs to the Southern California Shohin Society. He gives some great demonstrations there. Here he gives ideas on how to improve this juniper.
