Spring Open House at Rosade Bonsai Studio
Chase and Solita Rosade held their Spring Open House at the studio in New Hope, Pa. today. And was the day ever beautiful and so was this azalea specimen in the garden.
Robert Mahler, the curator of the world famous bonsai collection at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) was the guest artist designing a coloful azalea -- keeping with the season. The third shot is a closup of the 5+" trunk. And then the whole team taking off all the flowerws and foliage. Mahler said that in his apprenticship in Japan, azaleas were de-flowered, de-leaved and repotted together -- driving the strength of the vigorous growth into new foliage and growth. Next is a wire tourniquet (spelling?) used to hold/save the inevitable splits when bemding the brittle-wood of azaleas. Last is a picture of the styled azalea repotted -- good teaching by Robert Mahler for all who attended.

Some more pix
Here are some more pictures of Robert Mahler during the demo (Taken after David had to leave).
For those who haven't figured it out, this will be a windswept, if all goes right. Seeing someone who knows what they are doing create this difficult style is an education in itself. The finished tree, and two pix of Robert finishing up the potting. Thanks to Kevin Goveia (no slouch as a potter himself) for help in finding the pot in Chase's storeroom. Robert had an interesting observation on soil. He has stopped using any organics in his soil mix since he learned that, as the bark decomposes, it goes very acid, distressing all but acid-loving trees. It was a wonderful demonstration by this very modest artist. Last edited by Bart Thomas : 14-May-2005 at 11:41 PM. |
