Sound Off South Texas Workshop #2

The day started at 4:15 A.M. with the hubby running outside to cover our soil mixture from the heavy downpour of rain that came in. But by 10:00 A.M. we had bright sunshine and our melt your bones humidity, but a few brave souls made the trip.

My many many Thanks go to Mr. Andy Graham (agraham) from Harlingen,Tx that made the trip to work the trees and give guidance to a couple of lucky people who got some good one on one instructions (Including Me) he is a very wonderful fella who came and made magic with the wee trees.

Many Thanks to Mr. Behr Appleby (grampz) for coming as well and giving hubby a one on one lesson or three on the trees as well as giving us the joy and pleasure of his company and explaining his ways of thinking outside the box...Very enlightening.

My Gratitude as well as my Thanks to Mr. Jay Nolen (JayNolen) for his many hours in working here as well and also the pleasure of his company and his oh so welcome dry wit/dead pan way of saying things to bring a smile or chuckle to all around him.

Now I guess you folks are ready to see some pics of the day and the folks. I did take hundreds! But will only post a few as this girl is bone tired!
Irene

Hi Art. That would be my ficus retusa (goldengate) Styled in the Banyan Style.
Three weeks ago it was leaf striped and branches were shortened and selected/removed. This weekend it was re-potted from a 30 inch oval mica pot to a lovely 31 inch Green ceramic rectangle pot. The change in pots is quite dramatic. It looked nice in the oval pot, but the tree does not have a feminine trunk (its too big and straight, very little taper). The more massive rectangle pot really will add to its more masculine character.

This is a picture of the tree 9 months ago.

Hi IreneB, thanks for the post. Seeing the A&M tee shirt on somebody there really makes me think of home. I grew up in East Texas and I remember wanting to be aggies. I became a Cougar though. I also went to school in San Antonio in the 80's too. It is nice to see folks in Texas doing bonsai.

Nice post Irene. I would like to see some names to the pics though. The first one looks like shot of Behr and someone. I can't be sure though cause it looks as though "G" has lost some weight!

Thanks for posting, Al

As Mr. Andy said, thank you Ms. Irene and Mr. Terry for hosting such an educational and fun day...

Mr. Al, indeed the character in the straw hat in the first photo is me, along side Mr. Andy...In fact that is the closest we got that day before we began being drawn in all directions, and thankfully before all the sweating started...The second photo is me again kneeling to feel the roots of the ficus...Don't you just love to get your fingers in a heavy bush of ficus roots, there is just nothing quite like that sensation...Also in that photo are Mr. Jay on the left, Mr. Andy standing on the right, and Mr. Terry [Ms. Irene's husband] seated...The third photo shows Mr. Andy after he finally was coerced into doing some of the work, or he got too close to the water hose when washing roots, I'm not sure which...Photos 4 & 5 show Mr. Jay and Mr. Andy taking their turns fondling the ficus roots...Photo 6 is Mr. Dow Mathis from the San Antonio Club and I looking over a Yaupon Holly he purchased from Ms. Irene...This was the last tree worked on that day, and I do hope someone got a photo...Unfortunately I did not get a before or after of the tree...

In post #2 the first photo is Mr. Andy working with Mr. Dow on a crepe myrtle, and the second is Mr. Dow with what was left of his tree after Mr. Andy butchered it but before they proceeded to saw off the roots...The third photo is Mr. Terry teaching me how to re-pot and trim a ficus Nerifolia, whose roots are not nearly as much fun to fondle...

Sorry to burst your bubble Mr. Andy, but as I stated when we were leaving, "I didn't have a lick of fun"...

That is pretty much a 'play-by-play' of the photos posted thus far...Hopefully as more are posted better descriptions will be given...

Regards
Behr

Gee Behr, I thought it strange when you said "Now turn your apex and cough".

A few more.

First Behr not having any fun but grinning like a Cheshire cat.He must have sensed a camera in the vicinity. That's Terry(Irene's husband)with him.As you can see,I wasn't the only one who's natural and normal cooling mechanism was in high gear.

Next.....Jay sizing up and positioning the massive banyan in its new pot.Irene is hiding behind the branches and doing the heavy lifting. The pictures don't do this tree justice.Jay has taken a whacked back and butchered demo tree and in less than a year has developed some incredible ramification.

Lastly....we all pitched in with our opinions working on this Ficus nerifolia forest.BTW....just for the record....no fistfights brokeout during this discussion. If I'm not mistaken,we decided to do a bit more work on it after this picture was taken. This composition was originly created by Ron Martin for the San Antonio club last year and has been in the care of Behr and then Jay since then.

Let me say again....I had a great time.Irene and Terry were great hosts to me for more than this day.I also had the pleasure of visiting Jay's and then Behr's gardens and collections after the get together.
