Opinions on Apprenticing
I was wondering your opinions/comments on apprenticing. I heard both sides of the topic and just wanted to hear any other info. regarding apprenticing in Japan.

Re: Opinions on Apprenticing
CC,
Are you thinking of following in the footsteps of Shaner, Manning, Makashima, and Manakativipart? If so get you hands on all the back issues of golden State magazine for a good look at daily activities. Especially 1989 thru 94 or so. A huge commitment but a cool future occupation.

Re: Opinions on Apprenticing
I'm certainly no expert but I can't help but think it would be terrific if you are planning to dedicate your life to bonsai. I can't think of anything better than doing extensive training under the tutelage of a great master. In fact, I suppose even if it remains a hobby and you have the means to take the time, it would still be great.
Is the negative along the lines of being steeped in one school of thought or one philosophy? As long as that is understood I don't see a problem. In my former career (psychotherapy) I chose to do my intensive training in a Freudian program. I disagreed with 75% of Freud's thinking and now 90% but the training was invaluable. It taught me a disciplined way of thinking that few other schools of psychology teach. It also taught me classical pyschiatry. When I went into practice I always felt I had a better grasp of psychodynamics than many of my colleagues because of this disciplined, classical approach. I would think the same would be true with bonsai. So I say go for it! |

CC, I'd be interested in what you've heard, pro and con, about apprenticing. My own feeling is that apprenticing of any kind is a good thing so long as the teacher knows their subject well and the apprentice is open, honest, and willing to learn. If the two are put together accelerated learning can take place. If not, it's a waste of time for both the teacher and the apprentice.

Re: Opinions on Apprenticing
Moved from there to here:
[quote:f17551fd9b] [size=3:f17551fd9b] Posted by: Deece Posted on: June 5th, 2002, 12:46am Hi all, i'm fairly new here, although i have been following the topics for a while as a guest. I am from Australia and am currently studying Horticulture. I am 22 and have been into bonsai for a bit over a year now and want to expand my field of knowledge before i work on any more trees. I finish my course at the end of next year (late 2003) and was considering going to Japan to maybe do an apprenticeship in bonsai. I have a background in graphic design and its great to be able to use my skills in design i.e. aesthetics and shape, form and space in the art of bonsai. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with an apprenticeship overseas and maybe where i could get information on or advice as to where i begin. Thanks in advance Deece (Dave) [b :f17551fd9b] * [/quote:f17551fd9b]
