My Intro To Bonsai Class

Well I've finally had instruction in Bonsai. It was great! I will write again about the class later but for now I wanted to show what it yeilded. I will point out the negatives I have noticed on my own but welcome any further comments.

Apex too short - I snapped the original and had to use the current one as backup plan. "If you break it...it will grow."

Wiring is a mess - tried to do too much in limited time. I should have wired the trunk and finised the rest at home.

Sits too high - roots will need further reduction at next repotting.

Can't see nebari - Too bad because it was one of the nicest ones out of available stock.

Pot color and shape - I can't really get into this black oval. I think a blue rectangle would suit it more.

Thanks,
Mark

You must have learned quite a lot. The tree is not really all that bad. But that is not the important part.
What is important, from what you have written, is you know what is wrong.
That means only one of two things.
1. A good student
2. A good teacher
But if I had to guess it would have more to do with the student than the instructor. Learning is always more important than the teaching part. You have proven that you do that well.

Thanks Ron,

I think I have aquired a fair bit of knowledge over the past few years but very little in the way of practical application. The most important part of the class for me was seeing the instructor work on the trees right in front of me.

I think the height is pretty good. I wouldn't want it any taller. The other thing you forgot to mention is that I don't see any back branches. Look for shoots at the back of the tree when it puts out growth.

The top view is obscured by a leaf which hides whats left of the original leader. I didn't cut it off completely so I am hoping it will throw out a couple of nice shoots which will be used for back brances. I was thinking the same thing...another 2-D tree!

Looks like you had a great time and learned alot! I did go down there on Sat, I got there after 12 and looked around for a while. I saw a couple of people there from your class (they still had name tags on) but no one grabbed me to say hi... Oh well maybe next time! By the way did you check out some of the deals they had with their 50% off stuff I saw a couple of nice ones! I think next weekend one of them just might follow me home! Plus if you are on their mailing list you get an additional 10% off!!!

Adam,

I left around 1:30. I looked for you but didn't see you. I did run into Candy J. Shirey however. It was nice to meet someone from BonsaiTalk.
