Martha Meehan Workshop

last week my club flew in Martha Meehan to give some demos and workshops. she did a pomegranate workshop and a demo on a "Chinese Hat Tree." last night i went to her Bring Your Own Workshop with a Twisted Needle Dwark Scots Pine (at least that is what the tag said). Martha just went around to each person working and offered advice. she used a sharpie to mark off where to cut back to (my tree had a lot of black ink on it), and tried to figure out what kind of tree i have because it doesn't look like a Scots. i turned into a lumberjack, and ended up hacking off quite a bit of foliage. everyone thought my tree was rather odd because it was budding back on old wood where no sunlight was getting in (good for me). at the end of the night i still had some stuff to do, but i learned a lot and had fun. i attached a pic of my work in progress below.

Jo-S,
Very cool start. Glad you had fun and learned.

Miniature lumberjacking, I like that. Tiny tiny chainsaws, little baby axe, little bulldozer to pull the timbers out of the forest...

this one guy was helping me cut down part of the old trunk, and said "Timber!" i'm not kidding. another guy came over, and said "You started out with a $30 tree, and now you have about a $5 tree." it took the whole time just to clean it up, and five minutes before i left i wired the new crown up.

it was cool, this guy brought in this casuarina that i guess is endangered just to show Martha because she had never seen one (not to mention one in as she calls it "The North Pole"). i was disappointed that i forgot to bring my camera to show all of the cool trees people ended up with afterwards. i was, again, the youngest by at least 20 years, but all of the oldsters (no offense guys) thought it was cool that i was there.

my mother saw the tree when i got home and said that it looked like Edward Scissorhands had gotten at my tree, but i told her that in a few weeks it will just explode with buds (i'm hoping).
