Looks great, Rene. Doesn't it just kill you to cut a tree back that much? It sort of like, there's goes $5.00 worth. Now $10. worth. Woops, that was a $15 branch! I know it's necessary, just hard to do!

Matt,

The branch on the left is quite thick, and this was how far we could bend it with a single 5mm wire. I didn't want to stress the tree to much, and I think it looks good like this aswell.

Adam,

Haven't really thought about that. I'm just trying to keep the tree healthy right now. I've had some dieback on some branches. Mostly due to clumsy wiring on my part , but right now I get a lot of new buds so I think I'm ok. I'm open for pot suggestions.

Al,

I'm fortunate indeed because Marc lives about a 1 1/2 hour drive from here so I guess I will get another chance to work with him. We visited the Noelanders award this year which was very good too. I bought this yew at the nursery of Ruud Lagas where the workshop was held. I paid 70 Euro's for it. I think 1 US$ is now about 99 eurocents so that would be about $70 ? I don't know if you can compare the Euro and the $ like this. Maybe we should compare the prices of say a hamburger at McDonalds to see what they are really worth...

Earl,

No, not really. Maybe I had a lot more foliage in the beginning, but now I have a pre-bonsai instead of a bush. :-)

rgds, René

Noelanders Yew Continued

Hi,

Maybe you remember the yew I styled during a Marc Noelanders workshop. This was the end result :

My yew experienced some dieback, but also a lot of new growth. This resulted in it growing out of shape :

So I decided to remove almost all of the wire, which was starting to bite anyway, and tot totally rewire/reshape it. This is the result :

I even found a pot to put it in next spring and it didn't cost me a fortune ! It's a bit to large but I don't want to prune the roots to much, and I'd like the trunk to fatten a bit. It will go in a smaller pot in a few years.
Comments and critics are welcome as usual.

regards, René

René,

I like your tree a lot, especially after the rewiring, but I think the two trunks should be a little further away from each other. Somehow it "works" even now when the smaller tree's branhes nearly touch the bigger trunk.
I'll make a virtual later, if I have the time (if I see it worthwile ).

René,

Very nice tree, but...

I would prefer it without the second trunk, just my preference... I realise you may not want to lose it

Regards,

Thanks for your replies !

Treebeard,

I must admit I had second toughts about this branch being a tree in the tree, but after a while I started to like it. Without it the tree is just another thirteen in dozen moyogi but with it it has something special. Also it's a bit thicker than in the beginning which makes it look better.

Zeb,

As you can see it was further from the trunk right after the initial styling. After the second styling I put it closer to the trunk. Somehow it feels better this way and it's also more like the original sketch that Marc Noelanders made for me.

rgds, René
