Bonsai Workshop

The Hanford Bonsai society welcomed Kenji Miyata to his first workshop. This young Japanese Master was easy to talk to and was very impresive when working on trees.
I offered two trees to be worked on at this workshop and tonight I will show the first. This was one of the olive's that I am always talking about.
When I opened the back of the van Kenjisan went directly to the olive. He took the olive into the room that the workshop was in and unroled his tools and went to work. He cut the top out of this olive so quickly that I didn't even get a befor picture.
This first picture is Kenjisan working on cleaning one of the two large chops that he made.

Workshop

After Kenjisan explained which buds were for the first branch and apex we started on the roots. It should be noted that the large chop that is seen on the bottom of the tree was a nob and not a root. The remainder of the roots were cut very close to the bottom of the tree. This next picture shows the roots midway through the process.

Next kenjisan cut the remaining roots back to the trunk. This next picture shows how closley the roots were pruned. Kenjisan was very pleased and supprised to find that this tree was field grown.

Unpotted olive

Now that all of the pruning has been completed this is what the tree looks like just sitting on its roots.

Potting

POtting this tree was great. The pot that I have chosen is chinese. A 4x6 in. brown unglaised ovel. After putting a layer of soil in the bottom of the pot the tree just bairly fit. Some soil on top of the roots and it was finished. Here is how it looks in its new pot.

Kenjisan's comments

When Kenjisan was finished with this tree his comment was "This tree has a very good future as a shohin"

He liked the roots and nebari. He also liked the movement in the trunk.

Kenjisan was also delighted to find that the tree was field grown and not collected.

All in all this workshop was a very positive experience for me.

Nice job Glenn. Looks like a very productive day. I think the tree will look good in that pot.

I expect to see it at the Shohin Show I am doing at Nee-Hai this year. All are invited to show thier trees. I'll talk at ya later about it in more detail, probably aroud second or third weekend in April.

Great tree. It has real future. It takes some real knowledge to cut a tree that short and produce a nice effect. You were lucky to be able to attend and offer a tree.
