Antonio, There seems to be a break in the action so I want to take the time to thank you for this awesome post idea. Will be following it, to be sure.

Chris, Also want to thank you for all your help and input. I feel a bit guilty, getting this info that I'm sure you invested lots of time and money to get. Thanks for sharing.

John, I really hope you come back and add some wood to the fire. I'm sure that most of us didn't consider your input as " clutter". Two heads are -- well you know the rest. Thanks Quys. Larry

I am once again sitting in an airport lounge, waiting for a flight to the eastern end of the US. Two days of meetings, then back home.

My thoughts on contributing to this thread were to not discuss the tree being worked on, but to add some general thoughts about process. Chris and I have trained with the same teacher, Boon, and generally do things using the same process. I thought that I might be able to bring a different set of eyes to the same general process, not to distract. As I hold Chris in the highest regard and consider him a friend, I don't want to do anything that would reduce the effectiveness of his input to the development of this nice little tree. So, I will wait to see how this progresses and if any additional input could be helpful.

Tree has good potential,
John

Whilst I have seen many a time a thread degress to chaos, I do not view your imput in this thread along the same lines. A Second pair of seasoned eyes is a value to this community and expecially on this and other threads of its kind. At times it is a major benefit to see another side with new fresh eyes, but I do not believe on this thread that your removal from imput would benefit this community!
Just my HO on this!
Irene

I am always glad to get input from John. He has an analytical mind and has been more regularly attending classes with our teacher than I, so I am happy to hear from him for some of the finer points.

This tree does have some potential. I think you have probably done enough for now on it, unless you want to remove some of the new needles in those top candles with shorter needles. You don't want that to grow too much. I doubt that I would remove down to 5 pairs of needles, but I would take about half of the pairs.

John, what do you think?

I'd still suggest waiting until late winter to wire. There are two best times to wire Japanese black pine. The first is late winter or earliest spring before the buds begin to move. The second is immediately after removing all the candles, when the new buds haven't formed yet. This is a good time not to worry about breaking off tender buds.

I don't know that I'd cut this one down. If you cut it, then you have to begin again, developing the new trunk line for taper. This one tapers pretty well except for one little knot that can be disguised. You could, however, shorten this one considerably just by wiring judiciously. Think about it..the pointy "apex" idea is long past. Young trees have pointed apices. Old trees have rounded crowns.

If you wire without a major pruning in, say, July for you, and do it without manhandling it too much, I don't see why you couldn't repot in August or whichever month would be normal repotting time.

My question early in the thread about your weather had more to do with the differences in geography than hemisphere. My advice about repotting etc. would be far different for Kansas than for San Francisco, and we are in the same hemisphere. In the San Francisco Bay area, repotting time is in January for almost everything! In Kansas, we still have at least two if not three months of winter left while the umes are blooming in SF.

cool as chris i like the idea of wire july.

im with you on this pines with rounded crowns are the way to go, no christmas tree or my wife will start decorating it. i think to is ok height as long as we keep that apex in check and the two knots/chops can become shari at some stage, they dont phase me in the least in fact will be cool with the bottom jin later.

late august to early sept is a good time here for repotting. i have no fear of it i think it will be fine not like im doing any trunk bending and i wont man handle the branches to much.

june starts winter here, having said that melbourne winter is mild in comparison to what some of you guys have. 1c. is about as bad as it gets even our tropicals survive winter outside here.

chris thanks pal i assure you we will make a rippa of this tree.
