I agree Wayne, that this should be fine. I just wanted to warn Steve that one should proceed slowly and get the lay of the land (or roots) before being drastic. I also agree that drastic work now makes for easier work later. You just have to know how to do it to give the tree the best advantage.

Great thread so far, I would like to add some. I might be jumping ahead of Chris a bit, but as a rule of thumb, the year I tear into Pine and Juniper roots, I wait a full 12 months before I work the topside. Waiting this period should also give you a very vigorous tree willing to do all the nastiness that must be done the following years to come.
