Black Pine Transformation
Hi all -
Thought I'd share some work I did on my Black Pine in a Guy Guidry workshop a couple of weeks ago. If you haven't taken one with him yet, I highly recommend. Attached is the tree in its "before" state.

isn't it amazing when a good instructor "forces" you to wire everything? Good progress. What design, growing, styling suggestions did Guy give? I was very impressed when I saw him at WBFF.

It was one of his 13 hour marathon sessions, so we talked about a whole bunch of stuff. I pruned off all of the new candles, so I am now waiting for it to bud back (which it is doing already) so I can select the buds I want to keep. Specifically, for Black Pine he advised to water sparingly (in fact, we spent a lot of time in the workshop talking about proper watering - he believes that most people torture their trees with water. Most trees are much better equipped to deal with drought than with drowning. He said - this was funny but he meant it - if you ever have a tree that is languishing and you suspect overwatering - you should pick the tree up every day and blow up into the drainage holes. This lead to many juvenile jokes, of course
. He insists he has saved a lot of trees that way). He also stressed that for Black Pine you always want to "bring the tree in" - not allowing it to get too large and leggy. We discussed branch movement in a slant style - the branches on the outside of the slant should point a bit more downward than those on the inside of the slant. Back branches should mimick that movemetn, as well. Then, we watched him style an incredible juniper. Oh, and he also "forced" me to cut some "extra" branches off of my Satsuki. Fun.

I guess it depends a bit on your soil mix. JBP grow abundantly below the high tide line at the seashore and spend some time with nebaris completely covered by water. If your soil drains properly, you cannot overwater a JBP. If your soil is fine and stays damp, you certainly can.
I have heard for years to refrain from feeding and watering JBP in spring to keep the needles short. This is a fallacy that leads to very weak trees. I am certain this is not what Guy was advocating, but I wish I could hear the entire lecture to get the whole picture.

Guy's artistry is superb and at a level rarely seen. Remember he lives in Covington LA, water everywhere, humidity at levels that will melt most. He prescribes minimal water for trees following a major reduction in foliage mass (correct) if you live in an environment that does not maintain atmospheric moisture like Covington, then you may be dissapointed in the minimalist watering strategy.
