Gabriel, that portion of the trunk need not die unless that is the plan for the tree. Pines have soft wood and usually there is less deadwood seen on one since it deteriorates so rapidly. Grafting buds over there can stabilize the area and give it new growth, but that almost certainly will conflict with the design of the tree as shown. Probably some will die back and the jin will be extended, but with care it won't be as drastic, maybe about 1/3 to 1/2 as much.

David, do you have an updated photo of the tree to show us?
