Guy Guidry Workshop & Black Pine Development

Hello Everyone,

In April '01, I participated in a two day black pine workshop conducted by Guy Guidry. The material was 40 year old field grown mikawa black pine. (See example of workshop trees below. That's me in the picture for scale).

The tree limped along that first summer, but really took off in '02. This photo was taken July '02.

The plan for this year is to get the basic branch structure set so it can move into a refinement/ramification regimen next year. To accomplish this, in February, branch selection was made and all candles/buds were removed. Some old needles were removed to make way for wiring.

As of yesterday, it has responded well, budding on every branch tip and in several spots on old wood. Lots of sun and fertilizer should recharge the battery for the next phase of development, which involves reducing buds to two (or three for insurance) in each spot (mid June), then old needle plucking (October/November). It's a mess right now (no needle trimming was done), but the future looks bright.

Wow for sure..... maybe someday I too will be able to ... etc etc

David, please clarify, in the second picture (the first after cut down) it appears that the wire on the lower trunk goes only part way around, I'm confused??

The workshop was a birthday gift from my sweet, loving and understanding wife. For the first year, all I did was feed and water. I was almost afraid to look at it too long for fear it would take offense and die. Luckily, I live only forty minutes from Guy's nursery. He'll let me work on his trees and this has given me some experience and confidence. I've had a chance to prune, wire, root prune and pot several large pines and observe work on a lot of others. It is amazing to see these landscape pines (these were not intended to be bonsai) transformed into amazing trees. Guy is truly one of the best at finding the tree within nearly impossible raw material.

The wire is wrapped around the trunk to anchor the main branch being bent, which was pointing almost straight up. Raffia, six wraps of # 6 wire, three people and a guy wire were needed to bring this branch into position.

David, thanks for the explanation about the wire. To hear those trees were plain landscape material and not Bonsai stock is wonderful. I say that cause it shows if you know what to look for, and where to look, you can get good stock. Granted, you may need a person with great talent to see it, but it could happen!

Again wonderful tree!!
