Hello Everyone,,,,Here are a few photos from Guy Guidry's demo at the WBC5 convention. The tree is a San Jose juniper.

1. Robert Stevens commenting on the four hour time allotment to complete the styling.

2. Under the hood.

3. Before the work begins.

4. Future front.

5. After wiring, the styling begins.

6. Guy with Mel Ikeda, who assisted in wiring.

7. The result, just before the auction.

The work actually took five and one half hours with Guy plus two wiring assistants. The focus of the work was to eliminate the main problems and build the basic structure for future refinement. Minimal work on jin and shari was done as there was no time. The tree was auctioned on the final night and went for a bargain price (IMHO).

David,

did i miss it or do you know the particular variety of juniper?....and since it is relatively "public knowledge" to those who were in attendance, what was the "bargain price"?..if you don't mind.

thanks,

andy

Andy,,,I guess it's a matter of opinion, but this tree sold for $5K. Unstyled material of this quality can sell for that much. But then again I am probably biased. I had the honor of assisting Guy in the cleaning and wiring of this tree.

You're not biased it was a bargain. If I hadn't had to leave before the auction the winning bid would have been a bit higher.)

Thanks for sharing the photos for those of us who could not attend. Did I mention I couldn't make it?

That is some wonderful work and if I had the 5K, I'd be all over it.

I have to say I'm a bit troubled by the first branch though. A little rainbow-like? In all other respects, really fantasic work -- and in one day!

There were a lot of us who were very unhappy with the way the auctions ran, and gave up any attempt at bidding.

(I should note that this was probably due to the vast amount of material, both for raffles and auctions, and that none of us could think of a better way that it could have been handled.)

However, for the patient, and those fresh enough to remain into the small hours of the night, there were great rewards, particularly in tropicals. Ed Trout's literati buttonwood sold for around $200, and Soli Rosade's demo jaboticaba sold for $200-250, probably less than she paid for it wholesale unstyled.

Guy's demo was outstanding. I wouldn't have been a bidder, however. I don't have Ron's new hydraulic cart, and, oh yes! the cash.

Andy likes books full of pictures only.

I couldn't pony up 5K for a tree. I will have to grow one myself. Perhaps my great-great-grandchildren can style it for me.

I was going to sign up for Guy's class at Bonsai West this summer but I took the Bonsai school instead.

Thanks for sharing

Mark
