Doug, who hosted the event is doing some wiring on one of his Maple seedling projects. Its hard to believe this tree is just a SEVEN YEARS OLD!
That's right - You can read more about this exciting project in Doug's website in the "Trident Trunk" section ![]()

Re: Craig Coussins Workshop
Doug's place was crawling with bonsai fiends. The workshop/studio, greenhouse and outdoor benches were all in use.
I know the end of the wire has to be here somewhere! ![]()

Re: Craig Coussins Workshop
Craig and Steve Bender discuss some creation pruning of a couple of Cork Bark Elms. Craig explains that at this phase in their development, there isn't much to do beyond pruning back to the basic form, and then waiting for time to provide the next flush of growth so that styling can begin.

Re: Craig Coussins Workshop
This olive clump gets a good going over. Olive is an easy plant to collect. Doug has a number of large-base olives that were basically lifted, cut, and then rooted as jumbo cuttings.
You can read more about that on Doug's website in the Olive Tour section. ![]()

Re: Craig Coussins Workshop
By 2:00 it was getting pretty warm outside, but there was no stopping this crowd!
I have a bit of video of Bob Bugay using some power tools on a collected juniper that I hope to make available soon. ![]()

Re: Craig Coussins Workshop
Just back from a month in Japan, John Thompson brought along this wonderful oak. Look at that impressive base of roots. I've never seen anything quite like it.
I hope you enjoyed this photo essay of a day with Craig Coussins! ![]()

Doug's greenhouse is something to see. He invested a lot of time in building this unit from the foundation up, and the work really shows. This facility enables Doug to maintain a high humidity environment for his collected Sierra and California Juniper. It's also great for jump starting propagation projects in the winter, and for winter protection of some tender species.
The Bald Cypress in the foreground is also very impressive. I thought I would toss a plug for ***CHARLEY*** where there are several new greenhouse styles. I have had the Sunshine 6x8 for almost 10 years now, but after seeing Doug's space, I'm already thinking about adding an extension!
