Computerized Scroll Making

"Shikishi" -Japanese art board edged with gold colored trim-

If you have a computer, a scanner, and a printer that will handle larger than 8.5x11 letter size paper, there are many opportunities to make your own display scrolls using shikishi, or as we say, scroll cards.
I received an especially beautiful holiday greeting card with a winter scene of an eastern Bluebird. I scanned it and using Photoshop, I sized it to fit the 2 popular size shikishi. The more square one is 10.5" x 9.375". The long narrow one is about 14" x 2.75". After printing and trimming, I cemented them to the shikishi.
Following are two images of the shikishi mounted on scrolls ready for display.

Great work!!!
I love the thin on the most, but I would be proud to hang either one up in my house or in a display at a show.

Though couldn't the same thing be done by finding an image on the web and printing it out to the size you want.

Sure, thats possible. However. a lot of the images you find on the web are small and low quality. Once they are sized up, the quality degenerates quite a bit.

A better way than finding pics on the Web, draco, would be to use your digital camera and take some shots of scenes that really strike your fancy. That way you don't even have to worry about copyrights and the like.

With digital photo manipulation software, you can even add effects, like turning a pic into a "water color".

Mike, that is lovely. Thanks for sharing. I didn't even know these set-ups for home-made scrolls existed.

oOOooo...thanks Mike. I can tell I'm going to spend some time looking at this stuff.

So do you just use spray-mount or other adhesive to affix the artwork?

Mo, sometimes I use a spray photomount adhesive, and sometime a photomount glue stick.

Mike

I would look for images that are larger then after down loading it / saving it, I would up the resolution on the image and then save it as a TIF format which handles size changes better than gif's or jpg's. Though I do like the digital camera or scaner ways also. Again great work and thanks for the link. Of course I would never tell anyone to violate the copyright's of someone.
