Colin Lewis Workshop At Great Swamp

Tuesday, we were fortunate enough to have Colin Lewis visit our club to do an evening demonstration (where he created a very nice cascade arborvitae from difficult stock, demonstrating branch bending techniques (notch method) along the way.)

In the afternoon, we had a workshop with him on the lawn. As you can see, the weather was perfect.

Another view, showing the tree better.

Yes. It's going to be a cascade!

It has been my experience that Colin always does a good job. He might talk a bit funny but he does do good work

I brought a little collected common juniper that I got from Andy SMith last fall.

Here it is at it's new angle.

After I got home, I nudged it to the new potting angle. Still a lot of bark brushing to be done.

In the process, I used half of what I thought was a lifetime supply of #20 copper wire! Wiring those tips makes a difference!

Colin thought a "moon" pot would go well with this. I'm not sure about the fit in that sort of pot. I kinda like the Dale Cochoy pot it's in. Comments?

It would take a lot of root reduction, which these do not react well to.

HI Bart, really interesting post and I like the finished image, I have to agree with Colin though a moon shaped pot would do it justice, for me the current pot does nothing for this particular tree. When i first saw the tree it reminded me of a tree in BT 77 which has a moon shapish pot.

Jonny.
