Can you give me more detailed information regarding where the tree was collected?

What are the good spots for collecting on Vancouver Island and is it easy to get permission?

Great, thanks in advance, this tree is just great!

Carl:

George Heffelfinger, who, as far as I know, is still president of ABS also lives on Vancouver Island (Big Place, I know.)

I'd get over to the American Bonsai Association website and ask him your question. He is a very outgoing fellow.

There is an active bonsai club in Victoria, as well as at least one other on the Island.

Regards,

Bart

Carl,

Beautiful result. Good job on the wiring. Colin couldn't have realized the design without good wiring. Keep us posted in the future. This is definitely a keeper.

Best Regards,

David

Thank you, David, Walter, Attila, et alia.

Daniel, I didn't collect this one myself; Anton Nijhaus provided the material for the workshop. Bart's suggestion is a good one, though - talk with George, Anton, or some of the other people in the very active Victoria club about collecting spots. Maybe they'd be willing to share locations or even take you along.

LA - thanks for the virtual image. I think you've got it heading the right direction.

Ian, I'm afraid I don't have pictures of the other workshop trees - this one was taken at my house. All of the material was collected hemlock, though, and uniformly very high quality, though I do think I drew among the best of that good stock. I bought one of the rejected pieces of material from the workshop at auction. It's really only suitible for literati, but I think my odds of keeping this workshop planting in good health are considerably improved if I have another tree collected under similar circumstances to experiment with. Anyway, I'll post a picture of that one next time I get photo setup out.

Best regards,
Carl

Nice image, Ian! Thank you for putting that together, and thanks again for the kind words.

Yes, I think it would look super on a slab. That was Colin's vision for the tree, as well. I thought it was interesting that he wanted the slab to extend to the left of the tree considerably - see his sketch.

With my best regards,
Carl

Awesome work Carl! It really gives the impression of a miniature pine growing in a forest somewhere. I really like the foliage that comes from hemlocks. Too bad I'll never be able to keep one alive down here.
