The string and wire or string and rebar (usually) is an old gardeners technique for forming larger stock. In Japan you frequently see trees bent at strategic points with Bamboo, on the west coast (California) you would often see trees worked over prebent steel, I also saw this technique used ona field of "Tanyosho" estate size trees in Oregon, trunks on 1" trun starters and on btranches of the big ones (up to 6' length rebar if I recall).
