Thumbs up

Scott,

I have taken any and all size cuttings from willows.... From 1/2 inch to thigh thick.
They all root well and quick.
Let them root in water..
Irene

Getting them to root is easy. These were done just in water like Irene suggests. Any time of year. The hard work comes later in keeping them in good health.

An intresting thing to try is to take a thick trunk plop it is a nice big vase inside or out. The green shoots poping out of coarse bark looks amazing. You are sure to get a few comments from visitors.

No Scott....
I never have...The willow will shoot roots from all over (those that are in the water).
And yes sometimes I keep leaves on them.

Thumbs up Large diameter roots

I have rooted willows which were over 4 inches in diameter. I put the freshly cut branch in a 5 gallon bucket of water and just made sure there was water in the bucket. The branch was full of roots by late Summer and I planted it in the ground and kept the area moist (I watered it daily). I don't know if the tree is still growing because we moved away.
