When Is The Best Time To Propogate By A Cutting?

I have a large variety of shrubs and trees around my house, but my mother runs the garden and most of he stuff I would like to grow is in the front yard. this being said she won't let me Air-layer the japanese maple we have(which btw is about 15-20' tall). I was told to try air-layering but now that is out of the question, what should I do? I would like to do it by cutting, which would help me satiate my need to grow something quickly, but I don't know if it is the right time of year.

I also would like to try my hand at growing a juniper, we have two juniper bushes in my front yard as well, but i think there are actually 4 (2 different species growing in the same patch on each bush) I will put up some pictures tomorrow(its late here now). When is the best time to propogate these junipers?(it is early spring here (just turned spring maybe 2 weeks ago, but has been nothing but rain for the past week, no sun ...).

thanks to anyone who can help, sorry if I am annoying you with all my questions about starting a new tree in such a strict manner.

Mercury.

Don't waste your time propagating a juniper unless it is a shimpaku or needle juniper. If you're collecting or layering, it's a different story because there are fine trunks to be had in all varieties, but why propagate an inferior plant?

Japanese maples can be difficult from cuttings. You'd need bottom heat, mist, etc. My suggestion would be just to buy some starters (of an ideal variety) from http://www.evergreengardenworks.com or http://www.miniplantkingdom.com or gather seeds in the fall for planting.

Regards,

Matt

Maybe you could convince her for a trunk chop experiment...
