When To Air-layer A Larger Trident Maple
I have a larger (about 4-inches wide at the soil line) Trident Maple in need of an Air Layer. It has been mild in our area and we have not even come close to summer dormancy. I am in Zone 5.
What I am wondering is if the group thinks it is reasonable to start an Air layer now OR if not when should I start it. I know Spring is usually the optimum time. If I do it in Spring should I start it BEFORE or AFTER the leaves open. My thinking is that since in our area the leaves usually don't open until late May or early June (about 5 weeks ago) so now may be not optimal but still reasonably safe. I'd love some opinions. wmcorcor |

I normally air layer after the leaves harden off in late spring or early summer.

Hey Wmcorcor, I performed 3 air layers (trident map, japanese red map, and Prunus) about 2 months ago. Unfortunately not a single one of them took. So yesterday in a frustrated fit, I tried again. I know that it is late in the season, especially her in St. Louis, but I was willing to take the risk. I'll keep you informed.

Well my Prunus is not taking the second air layer very well. All of the upper branches' leaves are pendant and limp, while the lower branches' look fine. I think that it will make it through, but we will see. Of coarse the fact that it has been in about 95 degrees for the last couple of days hasn't helped.
