What Time Of Year Can Air Layering Take Place?

I was wondering if a branch can be air layered at any time of the year or if there is a specific period/ season that works best? I am not sure if this question belongs here, but I thought it fit best under collection....

Propagation is the subject so this post probably belongs there.

Newly developing roots are succulent and susceptible to freezing in some climates. That can tie your activities to the calendar a little, or make it necessary to provide the layering with more winter protection than the species would ordinarily require in your zone.

I usually let a plant bud out fully before layering. That foliar activity seems to promote the rooting when the flow of sap has been interrupted.

Regards,

Matt

From what ive just learned an airlayer will probably root any time during the growing season, but the only thing you have to worry about is time. If you start an airlayer in mid summer, then it may just begin throwing some roots just before its start dropping below freezing at night(in my zone).
So you need a good 2 to 3 months during the growing season for deciduos trees. conifers take longer(maybe 4-5 months) but i dont know i havent tried it yet.
Anyway, like treebay said, in the spring just after the foliage is full is the best time.
