UPDATE:
The leaves on this maple has finally started to brown a bit on the edges...however, the buds are also breaking! Just a quick question: Does that mean the roots are functioning properly, or does it just mean the energy in the buds will just open once they are there? I guess what I'm really asking is, if my maple's leaves are browning, and buds are breaking, will it still be ok and if not, what should I do? right now, it's in a pot of 50-50 peat and gravel. I water it about twice a day. There are about 20 leaves on it now, I've removed lots more to reduce stress. It's almost autumn. (in a week)

The new buds are probably a repsonse to the hard pruning you did. This all sounds pretty normal to me. Make sure you are not keeping the soil too wet. 50% peat is alot and peat tends to hang on to the water for a long time.
