I've never seen a seedling or sprouted cutting that I have not liked. It is some kind of disease. Should I spray myself with Sevin or Safer?

Joanie, I would be happy to send you some cork oak acorns, but will not have access to more until next fall. The high school I attended in Central California is ringed with HUGE cork oaks, and when I visit during the holidays I take a walk to my old alma mater and gather acorns.

Most of the little trident seedlings are now dug up and are in little pots. The local Mall has a clubs event in the fall. Our bonsai club sells young trees and old pots, and all my excess cuttings and seedling end up there. Works out well for everyone.

Carmen, if you can send some my way next year, we can work something out for something you like.

Oh, and there's one other tree I plan to take cuttings from, almost forgot. A dwarf gingko. Can't you just imagine a little gingko forest, four or five inches high?? The leaves are only as big as the tip of your little finger.

Rather than cuttings, I'm going to air layer (ok, attempt to air layer) some acer palmatum and Carpinus caroliniana for future thread grafts.

If anyone has done this with Carpinus, I would love to hear about your experiences.

Since I've had great success this year already with really fast cutting rootings, I wondered how it was going with everybody else.

I'm amazed how it went because it's still only May here and I have rooted hardwood cherry cuttings - looking like ready made mame in exactly 1 month. Cuttings were made April 11 and yesterday May 8, already 75% had substantial enough roots to be potted up. I'm amazed but then it was the warmest April for 300 years here.

The other amazing success (well I find it amazing) was quince cuttings 3cm thick! (1.25") in 5 weeks - completely filled the pot they were in.

I've now made a batch of Chinese Elm cuttings, some zelkova and Pomegranate. I'm leaving the remaining cherry to see what happens.

So, what's happening with everybody else's cuttings?

mother and daughter alike

Seeds generally give a better taper ad nebari, and they are more individual in their characteritics from the parent plant.

Acer palmatums for the same purpose.

My neighbor has a trident and I am downwind. I have more seedlings than I know what to do with.

Flowering cherry cuttings because the grow great guns and they go over well to raffle off at club meetings for some quick cash for the cause.

A couple of varieties of azalea cuttings because I can't seem to throw trimmings on the compost pile.

I am growing cork bark oaks from acorns. Is there an advantage to using cuttings?

Of the four prunus mume cuttings I took, two were culled this morning as they were clearly dead. I've got two left that are still green, one of which has nice healthy looking leaves. I hope its rooted!

I've also got a seiju cutting I took but I don't know about it . . . its starting to shrivel, but its still green.

I had two flats (400) cuttings of ficus nerifolia that we made last summer(remember Joainie?) at our club.

They were groing like mad then we got 20 degree weather here-- wiped them out. Never gets that cold. I never move my trees--Im in Zone 10. Sad very sad.

Bright side

Saved me a lot of future work.

My cutting incubator is a VERY OLD plexiglas planter my husband made. It was supposed to be a terrarium. A pair of them supported book shelves instead of using cinderblocks, like all the other poor college students used. Yes, it was the 70's.

Now it covers a low round bonsai pot and is perfect for keeping in some moisture and blocking the wind. It is kind of falling apart so I can fit a dripper through a side crack for watering.

It keeps me within limits. When the pot is full, no more cuttings! (Some Dwarf Oregon Grape were crammed in after culling some of the failures).
