Re: Sowing seed
An excellent article Matt... But, I usually use a nice method for soaking, it is not exactly soaking... Well, it's confusing but here it is how I plant them, and it has certainly worked, since I have so many little guys that I'm not even sure about what I'm going to do with them...
Step 1: Recolecting, why would you pay for seeds, go find them, you will learn how does the tree lives out in nature, and it will help you understant it, and take good care of it (at least, that's what I think) Step 2: Soaking (I don't know if it is exactly that) Well, I take a paper napkin (toilette paper, cotton, or anything like that) place it over a disposable little dish, and put my seeds over the paper, then put another paper cover, and add a lot of water, until the water has covered both the paper and the seeds (remembering now about, what we did on the school with those jelly containers)... Step 3: After a period of about 1-4 days I let it rest, and add more water when dry... then you'll see some little roots comming out, hurry up and sow them in the ground... well, this method has worked really nice for me, don't know if it will do the same for you.... I have had a rate of success (depending on the seed) of almost a 100%... (well, not that much really) but try it, it will work... bye... Jose Alberto

Re: Sowing seed
Jose, I have a small Apline rock garden and also several troughs in which I grow Alpine plants. I have gotten free seed from the North American Rock Garden Society and have started them almost exactly as you say with great success. The only difference, is that once they sprout I put them in small peat pots for them to grow until they go in the ground.
There have been several articles in the North American Rock Garden Society magazine about this method. As you say, the method works very well and certainly easier than my attmepts in starting soil, etc. Earl |

Re: Sowing seed
you're right! I also use a pregrowing pot... it is a pot with some soil to let it grow (I even use cans for this). Then pass it to a gallon (and up) container to have it growing, now I just passed some of the little guys in growing boxes, I don't use the ground, because my mom would kill me if I plant a "tree" on my garden...
