seedlings
I'm sure this question has been asked a hundred times, but please humor me! I planted some Jap. Maple, Jap. Black Pine, and Giant Sequoia seeds about three weeks ago, and most have sprouted and are a couple of inches tall. How long should I wait before placing them into their own containers. Some of them are growing in those peat pellet things. It's still too cold here to put them outside yet, but I would like to move them to a better location than the garage their in now.
Thanks |

Re: seedlings
I usually wait until they get at least 2 true leaves and then pot them up in their own pots. It somewhat depends on how close they are together but the roots can get tangled up pretty fast. If you plan to use them for bonsai, cut the tap root when you pot.

Re: seedlings
Johnny: The peat pellets will pose a problem in that they are intended to be planted directly into the ground with out seperating the peat from the roots. You do not have to hurry to transplant your seedlings, wait until the weather warms up. Untangle the roots from the peat and cut the tap root leaving idealy four or more lateral roots around the trunk of your seedling. Plant into a four inch pot and start feeding when new growth is astablished. Sounds like you are having fun. I personally start seeds every year. This year I have started J-black pine, bald cypress, celtis, coark oak, peach, J-maple.

Re: seedlings
Thanks for the info., both of you! I am having a good time with these seedlings. My 7 yr. old daughter and I planted them, it's pretty neat watching them grow from day to day.
I've also planted Jap. Red Cedar and Chinese Elm, but they haven't even thought about sprouting yet. Are they usually late, or do I have a pan full of dead seeds?! Thanks again! |
