Seed success and seedlings
What kind of success has everyone had growing from seed? I sowed around 16 black pine seeds and had half to come up only loosing one to damping off. How long should I let the seedlings grow before replanting them in a pot? I put these in the peat pellets and started them in the house under a grow lamp. They are between 3 and 4 inches tall and a month old.
I have several more types of seeds to try. More black pine, Chinese Elm, CA Redwood, Japenese Red cedar and Japanese Maple. Thanks Ernie |

Re: Seed success and seedlings
I haven't had much luck with those peat pots. *I think they were designed for 3rd grade science bean experiments or tomato plants or something. *They have the potential to hold way too much moisture down at the crown of the plant or turn into fired adobe if you aren't looking carefully.
You could use some commercial striking or cutting mix (usually a mix of perlite, vermiculite and peat) and be careful about the watering. *Bottom heat is good. *A shot of captan can help with damping off. *Take a peek in the bonsaiTALK Links under Techniques->Propagation->Seed or search same on " amping off"Also if you're interested in this type of stuff, sign up for a catalog over at ***CHARLEY*** and it will give *you other ideas. Regards, Matt
