In Search Of: Japanese Maple 'Crimson Queen'
Hello again for anyone that missed me in the last two months, such as the ways of computers, i got cut off, lol. *
My question? well well well... there is a japanese maple called the crimson queen i do believe... and it'd make a beautiful bonsai. *unfortunatly they don't have the tendancy to grow as trees, but as shrubs, which i know for bonsai is just as well, but these are slow growers as well. *i found out they can be grafted to maple trunks that are between 2 and 5 years old and they can be grown as trees from the on out. *sounds like something out of a sci fi movie to me. *so i'd like to know more about them, and where i could find small (and i mean really small) seedlings. *and i'd like to know more about this grafting thing. * thanks a lot for your help (as always) * ~Sara |

Re: In Search Of:
We have a couple of the laceleaf (dissectum) 'Crimson Queen' Japanese Maples in the back yard. I bought them about 10 years ago in 5 gallon containers as patio trees. They were about $50 each then. They have grown pretty slowly, and have a graceful, weeping shape. They were grafted on green maple standards at about 3' from the ground.
They have some "Crimson Queen" over at mountain maples, but they're pretty expensive - $35 for a year old graft. http://www.mountainmaples.com/dissectum.html#Crimson%20Queen You won't find seedlings of named cultivars like this. They don't carry true from seed.

Re: In Search Of:
Now see that's exactly what i'm talking about Matt, except all the ones that i've found were grafted just like yours, about three feet up.... i was really looking for something in the 12" to 18" range... i know it sounds ridiculous saying it this way, but i've really got great ideas to do with it. do you know if you can grow them from cuttings?

Re: In Search Of: Japanese Maple 'Crimson Queen'
Yes you can. I think some of the mountain maples trees are either low grafted or cuttings. I see them occasionally at the bonsai conventions in California.

Re: In Search Of: Japanese Maple 'Crimson Queen'
I will try to take some. Most maple cuttings need both bottom heat and intermittent mist, and its just a bit early for this in my area.

How [i:86bf58f437]does[/i:86bf58f437] one get good bonsai material for the various Acer palmatum (and japonicum) cultivars? From cuttings? Or is possible to truly hide the graft well enough for a bonsai?

Re: In Search Of: Japanese Maple 'Crimson Queen'
Cuttings are best. Usually there is a difference in bark texture or color right at the graft. Sometimes there's an indentation and it's hard to pull off that because your eye goes right to it.

Re: In Search Of: Japanese Maple 'Crimson Queen'
Matt,
If you get any cuttings that take, let me know, i'm very interested in picking up two or three (i've learned already the best way is to get more than one, i've been having my beginner difficulty... i usually mess up the first one.) Also, i've been having problems starting both my Zelkova and my Pomegranate from seed, any suggestions? |

Re: In Search Of: Japanese Maple 'Crimson Queen'
Cuttings work very well with both Zelkova and pomegranate. I don't know about the poms much but citrus seed has to be sowed fresh right out of the fruit.
One other possibility is that maybe that pomegranate is not a viable seed. Some fruits have lost the ability to reproduce sexually because they have been hybrid in strange ways and they have too many or too few chromosomes or something. If I wanted to try it anyway, I would let it get overripe on the tree to the point it cracks open, then just clean off the pulp and plant right away. I'll keep you posted on the maple developments! Matt
