Rooting Hormones - need recommendations
I would like recommendations on rooting hormones, the only one that I am familiar with is Rootone and I would like to know if anyone has had experience and/or recommendations of others that might be better?
Thanks, Joseph |

They aren't the same, there are different strengths. You may want to search "rooting hormones" and read the threads that show up.
I was dipping my little cuttings in hormone powder, but since it didn't seem to stick, I dipped them in water first and then powder. Which gave them too much powder and killed them all. (Okay, so it ISN'T like dipping a chicken in flour before frying it! )Different strengths work for different species, too. So aside from the powder/liquid sort of decision, there is a strength issue. And some have fungicides and some don't. Joanie

I believe its Dirr's Manual of Woody Plant Propagation or something like that, that gives exact percentages of different chemicals that yield the best chance at rooting.
Are you trying to sever the tap root on newly germinated seedlings? WF

I have found that the gel one are highly price compare to the powdered one. I had better result with gel one, never killed a tree for having too much, like I do with powder. Other advantage of Gel or liquid, is uniform application compare to powder. Liquid as another advantage, you can dip it, and let it sit a few minutes to make sure, the liquid fully infiltrate the stem. If you leav it dip long, you should use a milder solution.
On young seedling, if you go with powder, make sure you dont put too much. I would suggest a milder IBA (the active ingrdient) To give you a short summary : 0.1% IBA is normally for softwood. Flowers, Geraniums etc.... 0.4% IBA is Semi-Hardwood... Easy rooting tree 0.8% IBA for Hardwood tree and conifer For a seedling , I would suggest something in the range of 0.4% since 0.8% will be to strong, and you hare not doing a cutting of wood but rather weak flesh. The highest I have seen is 1.6% IBA, and rumors says that you can have some 2.0% IBA but never seen it it. The higher rated ones, are only available in liquid and in bulk quantities. Regards, Patrick

Joseph, below is a copy of a post I made yesterday to the same question you are asking: I've used Dyna-gro products for many years, including their KLN rooting hormone solution. I've rooted large hardwood cuttings such as boxwood and silverberry cuttings 2 inches and more in diameter. I will soak the cutting in the recommended dilution for 1 to 2 weeks before planting. Then I'll continue to water the cutting with the solution for a month or so. I've had a very high success rate with large hardwood cuttings. Check the link for more info. Learning the art of bonsai may be more like water wearing away a stone, or climbing a mountain where the peak is always shrouded in fog and just out of reach. Persist, and someday you may see the peak in sunshine. You may pick up the stone and it's a thing of beauty. MP@BBB Studio |
