Rooting Hormones for Japanese Maples

I have a large Japanese Red Maple Dissectum (One of the laceleaf types) that I will be attempting to air-layer and take some cuttings this spring.

I have read some threads about the difficulty of propagating the Dissectums in particular.

That said, my thoughts are to try out the Rootcubes with one of the higher strength Hormex powders. Their site calls for #8, but I am thinking trying the #16, #30 and/or #45 to be safe.

Anyone had any experience with propagating the Dissectums? What rooting hormone did you use? Success rates?

Thanks.
Ron

I too am looking to try growing a japanese red maple from a cutting. It seems as though either no one tries doing it, or it has such a high failure rate that no one likes to talk about it judging by the lack of responses.

I spoke to a Bonsai expert at a nearby nursery on Thursday and he said the success rate of growth from a cutting is pretty slim. Out of 50 cuttings, he estimated only 20 - 30 would grow. In translation, thats a 50-50 chance that one will root and take.

The only option I have to try and grow one at the moment is to take a cutting from my girlfriends mothers bush and attempt to root it using hormone routing powder. Should hopefully be getting a cutting tonight when I go to pick her up. Will keep you posted on my sucess/failure.

Japanese maples are fairly easy to start. We do them the same time we do tridents, when the buds really swell, using normal strength rooting hormone, and place them into akadama and pumice (50/50) in a colander and cover with a layer of sphagnum moss. Don't bump them, keep them uniformly damp and best of luck. We don't do dissectums, they seem to be too weak generally for my bonsai interests. Do 50 or so per colander, transplant next year.

Cheers,
John
