Rooting conifer cuttings

I was wondering how to root conifers. I have a few cuttings of special varietys that I dont think I could get from a seed. If anyone has any suggestions that may help I would appreciate hearing from you.

Re: Rooting conifer cuttings

You'll need to be more specific as there are lots of conifers. Some root much more easily than others. I accidentallyly rooted a redwood cutting when it fell in some redwood compost and remained there for a month or so.

Some pines are notoriously difficult to root. There are a lot of variables, but with the toughest, you'd need fast draining soil, bottom heat, mist and rooting hormone, and unless you were really good, probably a shot of captan or benomyl every now and then to keep the fungus down.

Regards,

Matt

Re: Rooting conifer cuttings

Thank you Matt. The cuttings I am trying right now are from Thuga occidentalis 'Caucasica', Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Aurea' and Larix laricina. I used rooting hormone and planted them in perilite. I have also been misting then so hopefully some will root. I appreciated the imput, at least now I know I'm headed in the right derection.
