Rooting On Air-layer Question

i was wondering how people know when they think roots will start sprouting on air-layers? my layer on an atropurpureum (j. maple) is forming scar tissue at the top cut (and there is no way that the tree can bridge the gap between the cuts), is it about to start sprouting roots? i thought i saw a diagram of the process before but am unable to find it right now, thanks!

Yes It is about to start sprouting roots, but you have to have faith and stop checking it and disturbing the progress. Those lil roots are very fragile, right.

i only looked because some wind made the tree sway and the sphagnum was pushed away from the tree a little so i could see the area. thanks

my tree is starting to push out a second set of leaves from buds that are starting to show, should i remove these (all or some?) to help encourage root growth in the layer? thanks
