Redwood Cuttings

I have two Cosatal Redwoods that are each about 40 years old. I took some cuttings from them and have them in a container of pear moss. They are getting new growth, so I'm guessing the roots have taken nicely.

When would it be time to put them in their own container and do I use a traditional bonsai soil mix?

Thanks.

Red Leaf Redwood Cuttings

I have three of them in a 4" pot. Shouldn't they be in their own half-gallon pot if they're going to stay there till the Spring so the roots could really develop? Thanks for your input.

What Andrew means is to please go into your UserCP and fill in your location, USDA growing and heat zones. That way people can help you better.

Overpotting something can sometimes be a problem. A pot that is too big can hold moisture for too long, and cause root rot if your soil isn't free draining. Choose a pot for them that gives them only a little more space then you think they will need, that is probably the best way.

Hi, there, thanks for filling out your details, I,m in the u.k. zone 8 or 9 near the coast and coastals are borderline hardy here. In a small container i,d give a little protection, especially as the roots are so young and tender. I think any root disturbance now would not be able to heal until spring and you risk losses and with root growth minimal till spring no advantage of potting on now. In the spring, tease the roots apart and separate the cuttings and plant in larger pots but not too big whilst spreading the roots out to form the basis of future nebari (surface roots) sometimes this is done over a flat stone or tile to promote a flat lateral root system. (see pic below to see what I mean). Next season you can pot up whenever the root system starts to fill the pot if the roots are not disturbed, or consider transfering to the ground for the fastest growth. regards Andrew

Andrew,

Thanks for the great advice and confirmation. I sensed that this was probably the best course of action.
